FEATURED PROJECT
Architect: Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) · Photography: Art Gray · Bel Air, Los Angeles
The Tree House is a 1959 midcentury home in the wooded hills of Bel Air Canyon in Los Angeles. It was originally designed by Bill Mack, and it had been abandoned before architect Stephen Phillips led its renovation. The home has two bedrooms and two bathrooms across three levels that step down the hillside.
The renovation carefully replaced the original wood structure, windows, doors and decking while keeping the original details wherever possible. The interiors pair vertical grain Douglas fir, redwood and cherry with stone and stainless steel. A new supergraphic on the front of the house was inspired by the work of Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, and it is matched by a custom water-jet-cut aluminum guardrail.
On this project, I completed the exterior painting, the decking and the staircase. I also remodeled both bathrooms and completed a full kitchen remodel that included custom cabinetry.
Stephen Phillips, FAIA, Ph.D., founded Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) in 1999, with offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The practice focuses on modern and contemporary environments. Phillips is a professor of architecture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he founded its Los Angeles program, and he was elected to the AIA College of Fellows in 2021. Early in his career he worked for William Turnbull and Charles Moore, and their influence can be seen in the warmth of this home.
